CSU brass player advances in national competition

Freshman B.A. in Music student, Sophia Marino, is one of eight students advancing to the semi-final round of the International Horn Competition of America – University Division.

Sophia is from Fort Collins and attended Fossil Ridge High School, and won placement in the state’s top ensembles, including the 2022 Colorado All-State Symphonic Band, the 2022 Colorado All-State Orchestra, and the 2021 CSU Honor Wind Symphony, and the 2021 University of Colorado High School Honor Band Advanced Ensemble.

Sophia is currently a member of the Wind Symphony and the Marching Band at CSU.

According to the organization’s website, the International Horn Competition of America is a biennial solo horn competition open to Professional and University level horn performers of all nationalities. The goal of the competition is to advance the horn as a solo instrument, broaden the literature composed for it, elevate soloist performance standards, provide an opportunity for hornists to gain constructive and positive feedback, and support and promote excellence in horn playing in the preferred style of the contestant.
