Announcement of Joel Bacon as a University Distinguished Professor
Joel Bacon is no stranger to the stage – both as an internationally recognized concert organist and as a dedicated professor. He has performed on historic pipe organs in cathedrals and concert halls around the world. In the classroom, he brings his teaching and research on Catholicism and the creative arts to life, inspiring students through his interdisciplinary approach.
In his nomination for the University Distinguished Professor designation, Assistant Professor Bryan Wallick praised Bacon for his groundbreaking work at the intersection of musicology, theology and performance, as well as his unwavering commitment to mentoring the next generation of musicians and scholars.
“Dr. Bacon stands among CSU’s most internationally recognized and visionary faculty, with a career that reflects extraordinary artistry, scholarship, pedagogy and service,” Wallick wrote. “His accomplishments as a performer, scholar and educator have earned him recognition not only nationally, but across Europe, Israel, Canada and Mexico, marking him as a leader in the global field of organ and sacred music studies.”
As the Stewart and Sharon Golden Chair in Organ and Liturgical Studies and the Father Don Willette Chair of Catholic Studies, Bacon has developed an interdisciplinary curriculum that bridges music, theology, history and art. He has also led seminars incorporating diverse religious perspectives, including Islamic and Eastern Orthodox traditions.
Bacon’s contributions reflect his dedication to advancing scholarship and artistry at Colorado State University and beyond.
