The Kappa Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi, the National Honorary Band Fraternity, has been reinstated at Colorado State University. Kappa Kappa Psi is a co-ed fraternity for college and university band members and primarily operates as a recognition society providing service, leadership opportunities, and social programming.
The Kappa Chapter was originally founded at CSU in 1924 as the tenth chapter of the fraternity but went inactive in the late 60s. On April 23, 2023, 16 members of the Colorado State Marching Band were present to be initiated into and participate in the rechartering of the Kappa Chapter. The rechartering is of historical importance to the national organization and is being recognized and celebrated by other band programs and KKPsi chapters at colleges and universities in the more than 200 active chapters across the country.
The CSU students and faculty were joined at the formal initiation ceremony by students from KKPsi chapters at the University of Wyoming, the University of Northern Colorado, the University of Colorado, Boulder, and the Colorado School of Mines. Steve Nelson, the national executive director of Kappa Kapp Psi, and Bang Co, the national vice president for Membership and Expansion, as well as several regional and district officers, were also present.
Dr. Jayme Taylor, director of CSU Athletic Bands, is the CSU chapter and charter sponsor. “I’d like to congratulate each of the chartering students on this great achievement and to thank them for the incredible service they have already dedicated to the CSU Bands. I am confident and excited about the incredible support they will be able to provide in the future,” he said.
