Guest Artist Concert: Ira Gold, Double Bass

Join double bassist Ira Gold from the National Symphony Orchestra and Peabody Conservatory for an evening of solo music by J.S. Bach, Serge Koussevitzky, and Sofia Gubaidulina. Ira Gold joined the National Symphony Orchestra in 2005 after performing with major American ensembles, including serving as section bass with the Minnesota Orchestra and guest principal bass with the San Francisco and Detroit symphonies. He was recently named principal bass of the Bellingham Festival of Music.

A dedicated educator, Mr. Gold has taught at the Peabody Conservatory since 2009 and is now an associate professor of double bass, offering private instruction, orchestral repertoire classes, chamber coaching, and masterclasses. He has presented recitals and masterclasses across the United States and internationally, with appearances at institutions such as the Moscow State Conservatory, The Juilliard School, USC, Boston University, the Cleveland Institute of Music, and the Manhattan School of Music. His summer teaching includes the Boston University Tanglewood Institute, Bass Works, DCBass, and Bass Club London. He previously served on the faculty of Catholic University of America and performed the Vanhal Concerto at Carnegie Hall with the CUA Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Gold has been featured on Jason Heath’s Contrabass Conversations podcast, wrote the foreword to Winning the Audition, and contributed articles to the ISB’s Bass World. He was also featured on the Mind Over Finger podcast.

An active chamber musician, he has performed with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, East Coast Chamber Orchestra, Peabody faculty, and others, and has appeared at festivals including Grand Teton, Domaine Forget, Round Top, Aspen, and Tanglewood.

A Houston native, he holds degrees from Boston University and Rice University. He lives in Silver Spring, Maryland, with his wife Heidi, their daughters, and their dog Hamish.
