The Great American Songbook
CSU Saxophone Professor Peter Sommer and University of Wyoming Director of Jazz Studies Ben Markley present a program of standards from the Great American Songbook, including music by Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Duke Ellington, and many more! An evening of duo jazz, featuring saxophone and piano in an intimate setting, highlighting Sommer and Markley’s individual voices and long collaboration in a pared down instrumentation. Peter Sommer is Associate Professor of Saxophone and Jazz Studies at Colorado State University and serves as the Woodwind Area Coordinator for the School of Music, Theatre and Dance. He is a D’Addario Woodwinds Artist and performs exclusively on Select Jazz and Reserve Reeds on all of his instruments. Sommer has contributed his energetic and graceful playing and creative spirit to a wide variety of musical projects ranging from mainstream bebop to classic and contemporary concert music to avant-garde improvisations at venues across the nation and around the world.
Ben Markley, a jazz pianist, has performed with Brian Lynch, Greg Osby, Eddie Henderson, Terell Stafford, George Garzone, and John Fedchock. Markley is active as a composer and arranger with many big bands and vocal jazz charts published through UNC Jazz Press. Recent arranging commissions include the Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia and Wyoming Jazz Educators All-State Jazz Band. Compositions from Markleyʼs first two albums have earned him ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Awards. Markley was selected to participate in the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead program held at the Kennedy Center. Markley currently serves as Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Wyoming where he directs and coaches the Wyoming Jazz Ensemble, and combos. He also teaches applied jazz piano, improvisation and is the director of the UW Jazz Festival.
