Join, Dr. Antonio Carlos Guimarães in a two hour event combining a short recital, a lecture and a master class on the performance practice of Brazilian solo flute repertoire. Supported by the Federal University of São João del Rey, Professor Guimaraes was awarded an Artistic Award to present this program throughout the United States to promote and educate the classical music of Brazil.
Dr. Antonio Carlos Guimarães is the Associate Professor of flute and former Chairman of the Music Department of Federal University of São João del-Rei – UFSJ – Brazil. Dr. Guimarães is also a former Flute Professor at the State University of Minas Gerais in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. He has been an invited guest performer for the VI Brazilian Flute Festival, and coordinates the Scientific Events of the Brazilian Flute Association – ABRAF – since 2006. Dr. Guimarães held a number of orchestral positions, staff musician of the Minas Gerais Federal University Orchestra (principal flute) 1990-2006 and Principal Flute of the Dubuque Symphony, IA, EUA, 2001-2003.
Dr. Guimarães loves playing his instrument and is frequently involved in various music projects with his many musician friends. Antonio integrates the “Duo Invenções” with his wife, the cellist Isabele Alves. In 2020 the “Duo Invenções” recorded a series of small videos with their own arrangements to send to neighbors and friends to relieve them from the isolation during the pandemic, and in 2021 these videos were selected to be presented at the Brazilian Music Performance Association Convention. Dr. Guimarães has been the recipient of many awards including first prize in both the Concerto and Chamber Music competitions at Minas Gerais Federal University (1989), second prize in the Young Soloist Competition in Piracicaba Brazil (1987) and a Brazilian Government CAPES full scholarship grants for Master degree (1992-1995) and Doctoral Degree (1999-2003). Dr. Guimarães has also received a Funarte Prize of Pedagogical Concerts in 2013, and has been granted by UFSJ to travel abroad in 2022 playing recitals of Brazilian Music for Solo flute.
A dedicated researcher and educator, Dr. Guimarães has published among his written works a study on Brazilian composer Osvaldo Lacerda. In addition, He teaches in the UFSJ Graduate Program in Music on the Music Performance line of research. Dr. Guimarães has also presented Brazilian music seminars in Malmö, Sweden, and in Colorado, USA. where he studied with Tadeu Coelho and Robert Dick. Antonio has earned a Doctor Degree at the University of Iowa where he studied the flute with Tadeu Coelho and Robert Dick and a Master Degree at the University of New Mexico. In Brazil he studied with Artur Andrés, Antonio Carrasqueira, and Odette Ernest Dias. Other teachers include master classes with Keith Underwood, Julius Baker,and Mark Sparks at the Aspen Music Festival.
