Boundless, The Way of the Modern Flute
With Juhyun Lee, Piano
New faculty artist, Dr. Ysmael Reyes, with Dr. Juhyun Lee, piano, presents a program of works by Claude Debussy, André Jolivet, Toshi Ichiyanagi, and Richard Strauss that display the highly expressive, lyrical, and technical qualities characterizing the modern flute. The instrument had been falling out of favor with composers since the classical period due to its limited capabilities, making it unsuitable for the highly technical and tonal demands of late Romantic composers. The development of the more versatile and capable Boehm design in the middle of the nineteenth century marked a shift in the perception of the flute as a solo instrument and sparked an evolution in the repertoire that continues to this day.
