Online music lessons and group classes began far before the recent shifts in teaching modalities across the United States. Undoubtedly, however, internet-based private studios have exploded in popularity since early 2020.

Increased demand for virtual education, interest in making high quality instruction available to a wider geographical audience, and surges in accessibility and affordability of home recording technology and video conferencing platforms have sparked inspiration and debate. What musical skills and concepts are most readily teachable online, and how can we be best equipped to do so? Are our perceived limits of instruction truly barriers? How can virtual approaches supplement and augment our teaching practices, rather than limit them?

This seminar-style course focuses on the specific pedagogical considerations of the virtual studio in applied, one-on-one music lessons explained Bellamy. "Through hands-on exploration, analytical observation, contemporary pedagogical and philosophical texts, and engaged discussion, we will address issues of instructional methodology, learning outcomes, new technologies, accessibility and differentiation, student motivation, and community building as relate to the virtual music studio."
