The event is part of a scholarly research interest group within the National Association for Music Education (NAfME.org) that meets every other year; the panel invitation came from Dr. Marie McCarthy, editor of NAfME’s Journal of Historical Research in Music Education, at the University of Michigan.

The panel will seek to inform participants how to conduct historical research in music education, and according to the organization's website, includes "paper presentations, panel presentations, and musical performances. Organizers welcome submissions on any topic related to the history of music education. The symposium offers a friendly and encouraging environment for experienced scholars, graduate students, and emerging researchers alike."
