Reimagined Sounds: Lyricism in the Modern Flute Repertoire
With Jooyeon Chang, Piano
In this program, CSU faculty artists Ysmael Reyes, flute, and Dr. Jooyeon Chang, piano, explore transformed works through the voice of the flute. William Grant Still’s Three Songs, arranged from vocal originals, highlights the flute’s lyrical depth and soulful phrasing. Karg-Elert’s Symphonische Canzone draws on Romantic-era expressiveness and color, offering a dramatic and harmonically rich portrait of the instrument. Jörg Widmann’s Petite Suite for Flute Solo, based on material from his Flute Concerto, distills key ideas into a series of vivid miniatures—by turns playful, introspective, and bold. The recital closes with Gabriel Fauré’s Violin Sonata in A Major, reimagined for flute and piano. In an era when few Romantic composers wrote for the flute, such adaptations continue a long-standing tradition of reclaiming expressive works for the instrument.
