With a dissertation on the use of organ in sel ected orchestral works\, he earned his PhD in historical musicology throug h a joint degree program of Vienna's University of Music and Performing Ar ts and the University of Vienna.\n\nJoel Bacon has a growing reputation as a performer\, teacher and scholar in North America and Europe. He has bee n heard in recital in Germany\, Austria\, France\, Switzerland\, Canada\, and the US\, and live performances have been broadcast on Austrian Radio ( 1) and Public Radio International. He has taught at the prestigious Oundle International Festival (Cambridge\, UK)\, at several Pipe Organ Encounter s of the American Guild of Organists\, and at other courses in the US and Canada. With the principal violist of the Munich Philharmonic\, Albrecht R ohde\, he has recorded a CD of music for viola and organ.\n\nJoel Bacon cu rrently holds the Stewart and Sheron Golden Chair in Organ and Liturgical Studies\, the first endowed chair in the College of Liberal Arts. Before c oming to CSU\, he was assistant organist of St. Thomas Lutheran Church\, M unich-Grunwald\, and served as frequent guest organist at the former Hapsb urg imperial church\, St. Augustine\, Vienna.\nAbout Ken Cowan\nRegarded a s one of North America’s finest concert organists and praised for his da zzling artistry\, impeccable technique\, and imaginative programming by au diences and critics alike\, Ken Cowan maintains a rigorous performing sche dule that takes him to major concert venues in America\, Canada\, Europe\, and Asia.\n\nRecent feature performances have included appearances at Ver izon Hall in Philadelphia with the Philadelphia Orchestra\, Berlin Philhar monie\, Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco\, Vienna Konzerthaus\, Maiso n Symphonique in Montreal\, St. Paul’s Cathedral in London and Walt Disn ey Concert Hall. In addition\, Mr. Cowan has been a featured artist in rec ent years at national conventions of the American Guild of Organists in Lo s Angeles\, Minneapolis and Houston. Many of Mr. Cowan’s recordings and live performances have been reg ularly featured on the nationally distributed radio show PIPEDREAMS from A merican Public Media.\n\nA native of Thorold\, Ontario\, Canada\, Mr. Cowa n received the Master’s degree and Artist Diploma from the Yale Institut e of Sacred Music\, studying organ with Thomas Murray. Prior to attending Yale\, he graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree from the Curtis Instit ute of Music in Philadelphia where he studied with John Weaver. Following initial studies with his father\, David\, his principal teacher during his high school years was James Bigham\, Music Director at Holy Trinity Luthe ran Church\, in Buffalo\, NY.\n\nIn 2012 Mr. Cowan joined the keyboard fac ulty of the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University\, where he is Prof essor of Organ and head of the organ program. He is additionally Organist and Artist-in-Residence at Palmer Memorial Episcopal Church in Houston\, T X. Previous positions have included Associate Professor of Organ at Westmi nster Choir College of Rider University in Princeton\, NJ\, where he was a warded the 2008 Rider University Distinguished Teaching Award\, and Associ ate Organist and Artist in Residence at Saint Bartholomew’s Church in Ne w York City.
