On a concert that nods to the festive May 5th date, the Symphonic Band’s pursuit of great wind literature, creating a transformative experience for the audience, and musical and artistic growth of its musicians lead Dr. Richard Frey, associate director of bands, to select David Maslanka’s Concerto for Clarinet and Wind Ensemble for the 50-member ensemble.

The program features Clarinet Professor Wesley Ferreira as the soloist, and graduate music major Michael Bowles as the evening’s guest conductor.

Dr. Frey selected the featured piece for its romantic feel, powerful expression, and technical finesse for the soloist. Dr. Ferreira engages audiences with his “beautiful tone” and “technical prowess” on the clarinet (The Clarinet Journal), and his performance is sure to captivate the audience.

According to the composer’s notes, the concerto is “full of deep feeling, but it does not have a personal story. The two movements, “Lamentation” and “Dance,” present the classic masks of tears and laughter. “Lamentation” is very interior and very beautiful – it breaks my heart. “Dance” unfolds in the old sonata form with clear melodies, a bubbling and sometimes urgent energy, and a final release into beautiful quiet.”

So take a break from preparing for finals and come on over to the University Center for the Arts tonight at 7:30 p.m. for the powerful performance!
